Hakone

Hakone

A mountainous town known for hot springs, views of Mt. Fuji, and the iconic floating torii gate on Lake Ashi.

Hakone, nestled in the mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture, has been Japan's premier hot spring resort for centuries. Located just 90 minutes from Tokyo, this scenic mountain town offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji, therapeutic onsen baths, beautiful natural landscapes, and rich cultural attractions, making it one of the most popular weekend getaway destinations from the capital.

The crown jewel of Hakone is Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), a scenic crater lake formed by a volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago. On clear days, the lake provides spectacular reflections of Mt. Fuji's symmetrical cone. Pirate-themed sightseeing boats cruise across the lake, offering unique photo opportunities. The iconic vermillion torii gate of Hakone Shrine appears to float on the lake's edge, creating one of Japan's most photographed scenes, especially dramatic at sunrise or sunset.

Hakone Shrine, founded in 757 AD, sits peacefully in a dense cedar forest at the lake's edge. The shrine's spiritual atmosphere and the famous floating torii gate draw visitors seeking both cultural experiences and Instagram-worthy photos. A short hike up ancient stone steps leads to the main shrine complex, where visitors can experience traditional Shinto rituals in a serene mountain setting.

Owakudani, meaning 'Great Boiling Valley,' is an active volcanic valley formed during Mt. Hakone's last eruption 3,000 years ago. Steam vents and sulfurous fumes still rise from yellow rocks, creating an otherworldly moonscape. The valley is famous for its kuro-tamago (black eggs), boiled in the sulfurous hot springs, which turn the shells black. Local legend claims eating one adds seven years to your life. The Hakone Ropeway offers dramatic aerial views of this volcanic landscape and, weather permitting, Mt. Fuji.

Hakone's onsen culture remains its biggest draw. Numerous ryokan (traditional inns) and modern hotels offer indoor and outdoor hot spring baths with views of mountains or gardens. Many establishments welcome day visitors, allowing travelers to experience the therapeutic benefits of mineral-rich waters without overnight stays. The town's hot springs contain various minerals believed to cure different ailments, and the outdoor rotenburo (open-air baths) provide sublime relaxation surrounded by nature.

The Hakone area can be explored via the unique Hakone Loop, a circular route utilizing various transportation methods including cable cars, ropeways, sightseeing boats, and trains. This integrated transport system makes sightseeing convenient while offering distinct perspectives of the region's natural beauty. Art enthusiasts appreciate Hakone's numerous museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum, Pola Museum of Art, and the quirky Little Prince Museum.
